The Department of Facilities Management is responsible for the maintenance, renovation, construction, and planning of the University buildings and grounds. Facilities Management has broad responsibility of all aspects of physical plant operations, including utilities, energy, custodial services, fire and environmental health and safety. The staff oversee and manage a 200+ acre campus and nearly 2,000,000 square feet of building space.

The campus planning and design staff provides in-house budgeting, design, and management services for renovations and capital improvements, including:
In addition, the staff works with maintenance operations in planning and implementing major repairs and replacements. Finally, the staff coordinates external architects, contractors, and construction managers and facilitates all major construction and renovation projects.
Buildings and facilities reflect ways that an institution responds to the critical needs for teaching, learning, and research; residential life and and student development; administrative and student services; religious and spiritual formation; creative and performing arts; athletics and recreation; and cultural and civic engagement.
The Department of Facilities Management is charged with developing and implementing plans that provide and maintain the physical spaces and resources to enable faculty, students, and staff to advance the mission of Fairfield University. Accordingly, it is essential that we not only plan and add new facilities when needed but also direct resources to maintain and upgrade existing spaces, improve landscaping and wayfinding, repair roads, address deferred maintenance, and more.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Facilities Management worked on the construction and renovation of numerous facilities on campus - the science center, library, business school, athletic facilities, apartment complex, alumni house, and campus center. Later, they added the Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J. Center, Early Learning Center, phase one of the campus landscaping plan, and the Fairfield Jesuit Community Center. On a smaller scale, they renovated spaces for academic centers, improved science labs, and relocated several core student life offices to central locations.
In 2011, Facilities Management completed an ambitious building and renovation plan of residence halls.

The Director of Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshall is responsible for maintaining and coordinating compliance with applicable safety codes and standards across campus. The Director is principally a member of the Facilities Management team but also is a member of the Department of Public Safety and coordinates with the Academic Safety Officer on lab and studio safety, particularly with regards to chemical storage and disposal. The maintenance operations group includes the grounds crew, craft mechanics (carpenters), a locksmith, and painters. The staff performs regularly scheduled maintenance of all buildings and grounds and fulfills specific work order requests submitted by other departments, offices, and individuals. The staff also are responsible for observing general conditions on campus and addressing issues or problems that need repair.
The staff operate primarily out of the Maintenance Complex, which consists of the former dairy barn and adjacent buildings that were part of the original Lasher Estate which included a little more than half of the campus today.

The Utilities and Energy group is responsible for all heating, cooling, electrical, plumbing, and water distribution systems, controls, and related services on campus.
The Central Utility Facility (CUF) includes a Combined Heat & Power (co-generation) facility, providing nearly all of the campus' electricity and utilizing the waste heat to supply heating/cooling to all buildings connected to the main campus loop. This facility is one of a kind in the regional area and reflects the University's commitment to energy cost-containment and renewable energy technologies and sustainability.
