DNP Family Nurse Practitioner

Admission Requirements

Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admission Committee.

BSN applicants for the DNP at Fairfield must hold a baccalaureate degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university (or the international equivalent) with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher overall and in the nursing major. RN applicants who have a non-nursing bachelor's degree will be considered on an individual basis and may be required to complete select prerequisites to be eligible for admission to the DNP program.

Admission Deadline

Applications are considered on a rolling basis for classes until July 1.

Admission Procedures

Students seeking admission must complete the following procedure. Submit:
  • A Completed application (Apply Now).
  • A Non-refundable $65 Application fee (paid online).
  • A Professional Resume. Applicants are required to submit a current resume that includes employment and educational history.
  • A Personal Statement
    • Discuss a practice problem in your field that, in your experience, has a broad impact on patient care outcomes
    • State professional goals for the next 5-10 years
    • Explain how a DNP degree will aid you in reaching your goals
  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate degree (BSN entry) and Master's degree (MSN entry). All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an approved evaluating service.
  • Two Recommendation Forms and Letters, one of which must be from a current supervisor or professor who can assess one's clinical expertise and academic potential, accompanied by the University recommendation forms.
  • Copy of current RN License; licensure to practice in the state of Connecticut will be required upon admission.

International Students

Students from non-English speaking countries are required to submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report. A TOEFL composite score of 550 for the paper test, 213 for the computer-based, or 80 on the Internet-based test (IBT) is strongly recommended for admission. Fairfield's ETS code is 3390.

Interview Process

Applicants who meet the above criteria will be invited in for an Admission interview.

DNP Nurse Anesthesia

Admission Deadline

The application deadline is August 1 of each year for the following summer term. Applications must be fully completed by the deadline to be considered for review.

Admission Procedures

Nurse Anesthesia applicants must meet the following requirements before applications will be processed:

  • A bachelor’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2 with a science GPA of 3.2 or higher. 
  • Two semesters of biology with labs, at least one semester of chemistry with lab, one semester of microbiology with lab, one semester of college math (statistics meets requirement.) (Anatomy and Physiology meets the Biology requirement.) Prerequisites must be completed with a grade of B- or above within the past 15 year period (5-7 years is preferred.) One prerequisite course is acceptable from AP credits or an early college course. All prerequisite coursework must be completed prior to the application deadline.
  • An active, unencumbered Registered Nurse license to practice in the United States at the time of application. (A Connecticut Registered Nurse license will be required upon admission for the Fairfield campus only).
  • A minimum of one year’s current experience as a Registered Nurse actively working in a critical care setting by the application deadline (ER does not fulfill this criteria - see FAQs for full list). The one year of critical care experience must be current at time of application.
  • Current BCLS, ACLS, & PALS certification. Please note the program only accepts certifications from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross. No other certification programs will be accepted.
  • CCRN certification is required.
  • “Shadowing Experience” required. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of 8 hours of shadowing experiences.

*GREs are no longer required.

Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admission Committee. Students seeking admission must submit:

  • A completed application in NursingCAS. The summer 2025 application will be available January 1, 2024. Applicants seeking consideration for both campuses must submit the NursingCAS application selecting one preferred location designation and answering "Yes" to the question asking about dual campus consideration.
  • A non-refundable $65 application fee (paid online).
  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate degree. All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an approved evaluating service.
  • Two recommendations, including one from your current supervisor and one other from an individual who can assess your clinical expertise in an acute care setting (current or most recent nurse manager or nurse education. A charge nurse recommendation is unacceptable).
  • A three page, double-spaced personal statement stating your career goals and future contributions to the profession of nurse anesthesia.
  • A professional resume or CV that includes scholarship and leadership experiences, if applicable.
  • Copy of active unencumbered RN license
  • BCLS, ACLS and PALS certification.
  • CCRN certification.

Applications must be both submitted and verified in NursingCAS with all documents received by the date of the application deadline to be considered. Applications that have not been verified by August 1 will not be considered. We strongly recommend submitting your application one month in advance of the deadline to ensure your materials are processed in time.

DNP Nurse Midwifery

Admission Requirements

This cohort program begins once each year in September. Qualified applicants will be invited to campus for an interview. Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admission Committee.

Applicants for the DNP must demonstrate the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university (or the international equivalent). RN applicants who have a non-nursing bachelor’s degree will be considered on an individual basis and may be required to complete select prerequisites to be eligible for admission to the DNP program.
  • A grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Registered Nurse license to practice in the United States at the time of application. A Connecticut RN license will be required upon admission.
  • A minimum of one year's work experience as an RN (preferably in women's health) is required.
  • Current BCLS certification (must be maintained while in the program).

    • Why you want to be a nurse midwife

    • Your future contributions to the profession of nurse midwifery
  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate degree (BSN entry). All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an approved evaluating service.
  • Two Recommendation Forms and Letters, one of which must be from a current supervisor or professor who can assess one's clinical expertise and academic potential, accompanied by the University recommendation forms.
  • Copy of current RN License; licensure to practice in the state of Connecticut will be required upon admission.

International Students

All international students whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by taking either TOEFL or IELTS exams. For admission to the graduate school, a TOEFL composite score of 550 for the paper test, 213 for the computer-based test, 80 on the internet-based test or an IELTS score of 6.5 is strongly recommended. Scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (TOEFL) or www.IELTS.org. Fairfield’s ETS code is 3390.

Doctorate in Clinical Nutrition

Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from a four-year college or university, with a 3.0 GPA or better in any subject. Students who have graduated from an ACEND Accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) and have received a verification statement are eligible to apply, without the required pre-requisite courses. Those students who earned a degree in any other subject, may apply as long as they have completed the required pre-requisite courses prior to the start of the program.

All Egan graduate students are expected to comply with all requirements of their clinical/experiential learning agencies. Noncompliance with agency requirements (e.g. vaccination mandates) may result in the student being unable to complete the program requirements for graduation.

Prerequisite courses for the program beginning Fall 2023:

  • 1 semester of General Chemistry and lab
  • 1 semester of Organic Chemistry and lab
  • 1 semester of Biochemistry
  • 1 semester of Microbiology and lab
  • 2 semesters of Anatomy and Physiology and Lab
  • Introduction to Nutrition course
  • Food Science course

Applicants may apply prior to completing the pre-requisite courses, with no more than two courses outstanding. All the courses must be completed with a grade of C or better prior to starting the program.

Formal Admission Process

Application deadline is August 1 for fall admission. Students seeking admission must submit:

  • Application fee. Graduate Admissions requires a $65 application processing fee (non-refundable), which is paid online when you submit your application.
  • Resume or Vita
  • Personal Statement. Please write a one to two page letter of personal introduction and professional intent. Include the following information in your personal statement:
    • What inspired you to choose nutrition as a career?
    • What are your short and long term goals?
    • How will the DCN program at Fairfield University assist you in achieving these goals?
  • Transcripts. Submit transcripts from all colleges and universities attended that contributed to the baccalaureate degree as well as transcripts documenting completion of the pre-requisite courses (see Admission Requirements above). If you are enrolled in a pre-requisite course the same semester you apply, please include evidence of enrollment in final pre-requisite courses.
  • Graduate Record Examination. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is NOT required.
  • Letters of Recommendation. Applicants need two professional references.
  • International Students. We are unable to accept International students at this time.

Admission Requirements

This program is open to Registered Dietitian Nutritionists with the Commission on Dietetic Registration, with or without a Master’s degree.

Post Masters Doctor of Nursing Practice

Admission Requirements

MSN applicants for the DNP must hold a master's degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college or university (or the international equivalent) with a grade point average of 3.2 or higher overall and in the nursing major. Advanced Practice candidates must be eligible for APRN licensure in the state of Connecticut. Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admission Committee.

Admission Deadline

Applications for Advanced Practice DNP and Executive DNP are considered on a rolling basis for fall entry. 

Nurse Anesthesia has a summer entry only.
All other programs are for fall entry only.

MS in Healthcare Administration

Admission Requirements

Admission to the program is competitively offered to students who complete a bachelor’s degree in ANY discipline with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a strong personal statement.

Formal Admission Process

Students seeking admission must submit:

  • A personal statement. Students should describe why they want to undertake graduate studies in healthcare administration (submit online).
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended demonstrating a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an approved evaluating service.
  • Two recommendation forms and letters, one of which must be, preferably, from a current employer or supervisor. Recommendations are completed online. At the time of application candidates must provide the email addresses and names of their two recommenders.

Accelerated Master’s Entry to Practice Nursing

Admission Requirements

Eligibility for this program requires completion of a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a minimum GPA of 3.3. The following prerequisite courses must be completed prior to starting the program:

Human Anatomy and Physiology I and Human Anatomy and Physiology I Lab
Human Anatomy and Physiology II and Human Anatomy and Physiology II Lab
General Chemistry for Health Science and General Chemistry for Health Science Lab
Developmental Psychology
Elements of Microbiology & Elements of Microbiology Lab
Statistics
Also, any four Humanities courses (12 credits) completed from the following list: English, Philosophy, Ethics, Religious Studies, History, Languages and Fine Arts.
