Grand Opening of New Student Wellness Center

Breaking ground last fall, the Student Wellness Center is officially open in Jogues Hall.

Cultivating the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — is a mainstay of Jesuit ideals and central to a Fairfield education. The new Student Wellness Center aims to accomplish just that; it offers a central location for the Student Health Center, which moved in this August, and will soon become the new home to Counseling & Psychological Services.

“The newly constructed Wellness Center is testament of Fairfield University’s commitment to the well-being of its students. The state-of-the-art Student Health Center and the future home of Counseling & Psychological Services are conveniently located to allow easy access while maintaining student privacy,” said Associate Vice President of Health and Wellness Susan Birge. “These health and mental health departments are staffed by licensed professionals with the knowledge, experience, and compassion to provide the gold standard of care to our students.”

The new Student Health Center features patient examination rooms, a medication/injection preparation room, an enhanced laboratory, and an electronic medical record system.

The Student Health Center promotes healthy living and provides medical care for common health problems. Health care is provided by our physician and a staff of nurse practitioners and registered nurses. A nurse practitioner is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensed to manage common illnesses and prescribe medication. The Health Center, now located in the Wellness Center at Jogues Hall, is open daily when classes are in session. Services provided include the diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses and injuries, allergy shots, and a women's clinic. Health Center clinicians are able to order laboratory tests and prescription medications when indicated. Students who have prescriptions from their private healthcare provider for long-term conditions should arrange to have these prescriptions filled at a local pharmacy prior to coming to Fairfield University.

Counseling & Psychological Services, slated to move to the new Center later this year, offers individual psychotherapy, group therapy, substance abuse treatment, psychiatric evaluation, and referral to local mental health providers. The members of the professional staff are licensed psychotherapists who provide confidential, short-term psychotherapy to undergraduate students. The psychotherapists are trained in many modalities of therapy including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Brief Interpersonal Therapy, Strength-Based Therapy, and Insight-Oriented Therapy.
