Bennett Center: “Is Movement to Boycott Israel Anti-Semitic?,” Feb. 27

On Monday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m., Fairfield University’s Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies and the Judaic Studies Program will present, “Is the Movement to Boycott Israel Anti-Semitic?” by Gabriel Noah Brahm, PhD. Free and open to the public, the event will take place in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room. Economic, political and cultural issues surrounding the boycott of Israel will be critically examined in Dr. Brahm’s lecture.

An associate professor of English at Northern Michigan University where he teaches literary theory and Israel Studies, Dr. Brahm is also a visiting professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the School of Philosophy and Religions. Dr. Brahm is a Schusterman Research Fellow in Israel Studies at Brandeis University, and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) at Tel Aviv University. Focusing on philosophical anthropology, political theory and ideology critique, he currently serves as a senior research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP). He is a Scholar in Residence at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and an invited lecturer at Israel's World Holocaust Remembrance Center (Yad Vashem).

Dr. Brahm and co-editor, Cary Nelson, have presented 30 essays by leading scholars in the book, The Case Against Academic Boycotts of Israel, which explores the larger historical and political context of the conflict in Israel/Palestine. Seyla Benhabib, Eugene Meyer Professor of Political Science and Philosophy at Yale University wrote: “No other issue has divided the progressive academic community in the United States as bitterly as the Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BSD) movement against Israel.”
