Fairfield Ranked #2 Best Online MFA in Creative Writing Program in Nation

Fairfield University's low-residency program is at the top of College Choice's list of the country's best online Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing programs.

College Choice has again ranked the best online MFA in Creative Writing degree programs across the country. Considering both programs that operate fully online and low-residency programs, the independent ranking organization has placed Fairfield's low-residency MFA program at number 2 in the nation.

College Choice provides online resources for scholarship information, financial aid, and research guides for students. In addition to academic quality, their graduate program rankings are based on three categories: affordability, return on investment (ROI), and commitment to graduate education.

Affordability is based on tuition and fees, percentage of students receiving aid, loan default rate, and tuition changes over time. Commitment to graduate education is based on the ratio of master's programs to total programs, proportion of graduate students to total students, and the ratio of programs offered as distance learning compared to total programs. The source for return on investment is Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce Ranking of ROI of 4500 colleges and universities.

Fairfield University’s low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program is a full-time, two-year program that helps aspiring writers develop their literary voice, hone their craft, and make important connections that lead to publication. Students receive one-on-one mentorship from an award-winning faculty of nationally recognized, published authors, and typically gather for nine-day residencies on Enders Island, a peaceful retreat off the coast of Connecticut. During each residency, students take part in a series of workshops, seminars, and lectures that provide a rigorous theoretical basis for writing, as well as practical, hands-on experience.

Students in Fairfield’s MFA in Creative Writing program have the opportunity to pursue the study of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and screenwriting. Within these genres they may focus on concentrations in publishing/editing, spiritual writing, social justice, or literary health and healing. In the past three years alone, Fairfield’s MFA alumni and students have published more than 80 books and hundreds of articles, essays, stories, and poems.
