Fairfield Dolan to Host Sports Analytics Hackathon, May 9

Business Analytics graduate students will put their skills to the test and compete for a chance to win cash prizes provided by sponsor Athletes Unlimited.

On Monday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. the Charles F. Dolan School of Business will host the first Sports Analytics Hackathon sponsored by Athletes Unlimited, in the Dolan Event Hall. Registration for this event is required.

Dolan analytics professor and director of the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) program, Philip Maymin, PhD, serves on the advisory board for Athletes Unlimited and will host the event as an opportunity for his graduate students to put their skills to the test and participate in a live hackathon event.

“During the event, five teams of students from our graduate sports analytics course will present their research findings and insights, based on the unique and innovative data that Athletes Unlimited has been able to collect over the past few years,” said Dr. Maymin. “A panel of judges including both Fairfield faculty and Athletes Unlimited leadership will then award a total of $10,000.”

Graduate student Euan Brown, Fairfield’s assistant field hockey coach, will participate in the event. “I am hugely grateful for the opportunity to participate in this Hackathon," he said. "What Philip and AU have done is brilliant. Many classes end with a final exam, which is graded and never looked at again. This class is different: hosting an event to give graduate students, including myself, an opportunity to demonstrate the skills that we have developed in sports analytics. Hopefully the work we do for this Hackathon has tangible value for Athletes Unlimited while providing students with a challenging, exciting opportunity to shine.”

Athletes Unlimited (AU) was founded in 2020 by Jonathan Soros, chief executive officer of JS Capital Management LLC, and Jon Patricof, former president of New York City Football Club (FC). AU is a network of new professional sports leagues where athletes compete in fantasy-inspired games in softball, volleyball, and lacrosse. Soros and Athletes Unlimited CTO John Spade will accompany Dolan analytics professor and director of Fairfield StartUp, Chris Huntley, PhD, and assistant professor of biomedical engineering, John Drazan, PhD, as judges for the event.
