Stag Standouts Join Professional Ranks

Two Fairfield student-athletes have signed professional contracts to continue their playing careers. Right-handed ace Gavin Wallace '18 of the Stags’ baseball team was drafted and signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and women’s basketball standout Kelsey Carey '17 will travel to Ireland to begin her professional career with the Griffith Swords Thunder.

The New England Pitcher of the Year and a First Team All-MAAC selection, Wallace was selected in the 15th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Pirates. He is the highest MLB draft pick out of Fairfield since Keefe Cato '80 was tabbed by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round of the 1979 draft.

“It's a surreal feeling,” Wallace said. “I didn't believe it at first but now it's setting in and it's everything that I ever dreamed of.”

Wallace joins his older brother Mike in the Pirates’ minor league farm system. The older Wallace, who was also a First Team All-MAAC pitcher for the Stags in 2015, is currently on the pitching staff for the West Virginia Power, a Class A affiliate in the South Atlantic League. Gavin Wallace has not yet been assigned to a team by the Pirates organization.

Kelsey Carey heads to Ireland to join the Griffith Swords Thunder of the Super League. She will also compete with the first-ever women’s basketball team at Griffith College, where she will pursue a master’s degree in international business.

Carey graduated from Fairfield this past May with a degree in marketing from the Dolan School of Business. She scored 1,109 career points for the Stags, culminating with a team-best 15.1 points per game en route to Second Team All-Met and First Team All-MAAC laurels in her senior campaign.

“In high school, I could have never imagined the journey basketball would bring me on,” said Carey. “I am beyond thankful for being able to get a degree from an amazing university like Fairfield and now a master's degree from a top private school in Ireland.”
