RecPlex Plan to Go Ahead — and Other Board of Trustee News
Plans that have been in the works for several years to address a critical need for the campus and enhance the quality of student life will soon shift into action.
During its meeting on December 4, 2014, the Board of Trustees authorized construction of the comprehensive renovation and expansion of the Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Recreation Complex, or RecPlex as it is commonly known.
Construction documents are in the process of being completed so that work will begin in earnest in May 2015. The project is expected to be completed by August 2016. The project is estimated to cost between $22-23M. Funding for the project received a major boost in the past year through individual gifts of $10M, $5M, and $1M from former and current Trustees, and additional gifts from others. Additional gifts are being sought to complete the remaining funding required.
The new RecPlex will feature a three-level addition to the north of the current facility (towards Loyola Drive). The ground and upper level will be devoted to cardio and weight training, and the lower level will include additional multi-purpose rooms for small or large group fitness activities and classes. The existing locker rooms will be demolished and rebuilt to include dedicated locker rooms for the University’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams.
The Birkenstock Fieldhouse will receive a new, multi-purpose sports flooring to provide maximum usage for general recreation, intramurals, as well as acceptable indoor practice capability for tennis. Additionally, an elevated walking/jogging track will be installed. More information about the project, and any changes or accommodations for recreational services and activities during the construction period, will be announced at a later date.
Other highlights from the recent meeting of the Board of Trustees included (1) a presentation from Dr. Nancy Dallavalle, associate professor of Religious Studies and University Facilitator for Mission & Identity, on a series of mission-related activities at the University and formation opportunities for Trustees over the next several months, (2) an update and discussion about the progressing Fairfield 2020: Building a More Sustainable Future strategic plan process and development, and (3) reports from the various Board committees.
At the end of the meeting, members of the Board expressed their strong endorsement of the questions being asked and issues being addressed as part of the strategic planning process and the general management of the University. In particular, Trustees expressed thanks and confidence in Father von Arx and the senior leadership team in place and challenged them to continue to engage the University community in charting the path for Fairfield’s future amidst the serious financial and fundamental challenges facing higher education today and for years to come.
