Rabbi Balin will deliver the 13th Annual Lecture in Jewish and Christian Engagement.

On Thursday, April 4, 2019, Rabbi Carole Balin, PhD will deliver the 13th Annual Lecture in Jewish and Christian Engagement. The lecture, entitled “Female Faith Leaders in Collaboration: Rabbis, Nuns, and Ministers for (Nearly) 50 Years,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Dolan Business School Dining Room. A response will be given by Elena Procario-Foley, PhD.

In her lecture, Rabbi Balin will discuss the power of relationships among female faith leaders within the Jewish and Christian communities, focusing on the last 50 years. With the advent of second-wave feminism in the United States, women have joined together in unprecedented numbers to inspire, support, and collaborate with one another, enhancing their spiritual and professional lives and bringing healing to a broken world.

Rabbi Balin is the senior director of special projects at Auburn Seminary and professor emerita of history at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where she trained and mentored more than 500 rabinical, cantorial, and education students. She is the author of numerous publications focusing on topics ranging from Jewish women under the Tsars to the Maxwell House Haggadah. She has appeared on PBS’ “The Jewish People: A Story of Survival” and has written for the Huffington Post. Additionally, she curated the exhibit “Bat Mitzvah Comes of Age” and wrote and narrated the animated short “The Click Moment: Jewish Feminism 101.” Balin is a member of the boards of the Jewish Women’s Archive and Camp Young Judaea, and is a NY-state certified rape crisis/domestic violence counselor.

Free and open to the public, the lecture is co-sponsored by the Bennett Center for Judaic Studies and the Center for Catholic Studies. Contact the Bennett Center at bennettcenter@fairfield.edu or call (203) 254-4000, ext. 2066 for reservations.
