Fairfield Dolan Faculty Recognized for Excellence and Service by the American Accounting Association

Joan Lee, CPA, PhD, and Patricia Poli, CPA, PhD, were honored this week at the AAA Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

Charles F. Dolan School of Business accounting faculty members Joan Lee, CPA, PhD, and Patricia Poli, CPA, PhD, were recently honored with the 2019 American Accounting Association (AAA) Outstanding Accounting Educator Award and the Outstanding Service Award, respectively. The awards were presented to professors Lee and Poli this week at the AAA Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

Dr. Lee at award ceremonyDr. Lee received the American Accounting Association’s Outstanding Accounting Educator Award for career contributions that include educational innovation, excellence in teaching, publications, research guidance to graduate students, and significant involvement in professional and academic societies and activities.

Dr. Lee teaches financial and managerial accounting, business ethics, and accounting ethics. She received a PhD in accounting from New York University, and earned both an MBA in finance and a BS in accounting from Fordham University. Dr. Lee has published numerous articles in the areas of accounting education and accounting ethics. She was named the 2008 Alpha Sigma Nu Teacher of the Year and was a recipient of the 2001 American Accounting Association Innovation in Accounting Education Award. In 2014, she received the Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., Award from the Colleagues in Jesuit Business Education for her service as board president, board member, and editor of Journal of Jesuit Business Education. Dr. Lee is former president of Colleagues in Jesuit Business Education, and a member of the American Accounting Association and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Dr. Poli at award ceremonyDr. Poli received the American Accounting Association Outstanding Service Award in honor of her dedicated service to the education and practice of accounting. This award recognizes individuals for milestones achieved, and highlights Dr. Poli’s outstanding services to the Association beyond educational and research contributions.

A professor of accounting, Dr. Poli has served on the Dolan School’s faculty for more than 25 years, and was an advisor to Beta Alpha Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma.

Dr. Poli earned a PhD from New York University and a BS from the University of Connecticut. She has served the AAA on the board of directors, on its council as chair, and as a council member. Dr. Poli has also served the International Accounting Section as president, and as president of the Northeast region. She is a faculty fellow of the Jesuit Universities Humanitarian Action Network (JUHAN), and has served on the board of directors of Beta Alpha Psi. Dr. Poli is a member of the Connecticut Society of CPAs and served on its board of governors and as its president.

The American Accounting Association is the largest community of accountants in academia.
