Egan School to Host Advance Care Planning Workshop, April 17

Join us in celebrating National Healthcare Decisions Day by beginning – or continuing – the ongoing conversation about the care we need to care about.

On Wednesday, April 17, the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies will host an event entitled “Tell Us More: A One Stop Advance Care Planning Workshop.” The workshop will take place from 5:30 – 7 p.m. in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room.

“In recognition of National Healthcare Decisions Day, our faculty has organized a wonderful free event, for all people to begin thinking about their wishes and the care that they would want to receive if they were faced with a very serious illness,” said Eileen O'Shea, DNP, APRN, PCNS-BC, CHPPN, director of Kanarek Center for Palliative Care Nursing Education.

Participants will be informed of the medical, spiritual, and legal aspects of advance care planning through reflection, discussion, and advance directive writing. Keynote speaker, Donna Coletti, MD, MS, FACOG will discuss advance care planning and clarify common misconceptions surrounding the topic.

Dr. Coletti is the founding medical director for palliative care services at Greenwich Hospital, and is responsible for creating and overseeing the inpatient and outpatient models for palliative and hospice services as well as the educational curriculum for the medical residents and staff. She is also the medical director for the Greenwich Hospital Home Hospice Program.

Following the keynote address, participants will have the opportunity to visit various roundtables and join in discussions on the medical, spiritual, and legal aspects of advance care planning.

The event is sponsored by the Egan School, the Connecticut Coalition to Improve End-of-Life Care, Five Wishes, The Conversations Project, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
