Labor Day Weekend heralds the return of students, families, and red carts to campus, and it also brings back fond memories.
The people who are part of the first-year Fairfield experience change, yet favorite Stag traditions endure. Fairfield’s vice president of student life and staff of the Office of Residential Life gave a preview of what returning students and the Class of 2030 can look forward to as the new academic year begins.
“Move-In is one of those moments that stays with you. I still remember the excitement of arriving on campus, meeting my roommate, lugging my stuff up to the fourth floor, and realizing that this was going to be my home for the next four years,” said Karen Donoghue ’03, EdD, vice president of student life. “Now, years later, I get to experience that same excitement from a very different perspective. While so much has changed at Fairfield since I was a student, the feeling of arriving at Fairfield and becoming part of this community remains the same.”
More Than a Day of Boxes and Belongings
At Fairfield, Move-In launches a residential experience designed to help students build relationships and become part of a community rooted in Fairfield’s Jesuit tradition. It marks the beginning of friendships, developing new leadership skills, and discovering what it means to live in community with others. Creating that experience starts long before students arrive.
Meet Your Resident Advisor
For many students, a resident advisor (RA) is one of the first welcoming faces they’ll encounter in their new living community.
RAs are undergraduate student leaders who have, quite recently, walked in the shoes of the first-year students they welcome. As members of the Residence Life team, they help navigate the transition to college, answer questions, connect students with campus resources, and foster living situations where everyone feels supported and included.
Residence Life invests significant time in preparing and training RAs and volunteer student leaders before the academic year begins.
Building Community From Day One
New students are encouraged to take an active role in developing their community. Residence hall programs, fall welcome activities, campus traditions, and everyday interactions create opportunities to meet new people and build connections.
First-year students are invited to participate in Residence Hall Association (RHA) elections during the first few weeks of the semester, allowing them to meet other students and directly impact their residential community.
For some students, settling in happens quickly. For others, finding their people takes time. Both experiences are part of the transition to college, and Residence Life staff, RAs, student leaders, and campus partners are ready to help students navigate those first days and weeks and find opportunities to connect.
When Fairfield Becomes Home
Ask Fairfield alumni about Move-In and the details may sound familiar across generations: cramming boxes into a car or stuffing duffel bags for a flight, meeting new roommates, nervous goodbyes, first walks across campus, and curiosity for what the next four years might hold.
Campus may look different as the University continues to evolve but the excitement of arriving at Fairfield and beginning to find your place remains remarkably familiar.
For the Class of 2030, Move-In is the first step toward new traditions, relationships, and discovering the things that make Fairfield feel like home.
