2017's Top Stories From Stag Country

A throwback to the biggest news stories and the Stags who made headlines in 2017.

As 2017 comes to a close, Fairfield University is grateful for innumerable blessings that this year has brought to our campus and beyond, including the support of our loyal news@fairfield readers, totaling nearly 50,000 students, alumni, faculty, staff, parents and friends.

2017 was a news-filled year in Stag Country! Fairfield’s 75th Anniversary dominated headlines with the celebration of 75 years of excellence, Fairfield’s legacy and Ignatian mission that continue to define and inspire the University today, as we continually seek to expand our impact on the world.

Global citizenship was showcased through stories about service learning experiences, global scholars, study abroad and internships, faculty and student achievements and the men’s basketball team featuring 17 players from nine different countries. Fairfield Athletics also boasted four MAAC championships, the Glee Club celebrated its 70th anniversary and Fairfield Rising—the largest capital campaign in the history of the University—exceeded its $160 million target and reset its goal to $210 million. Richard Greenwald, PhD, was welcomed as the new Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences , and Paul Schlickmann took the helm as the Stags new Director of Athletics .

Mark R. Nemec, PhD was appointed as Fairfield University’s 9 th president. The presidential inauguration on October 20 was attended by representatives from over 75 colleges and universities from across the U.S. and the globe.

 

Fairfield U. #3 in Northern Region by U.S. News & World Report

Fairfield University was named #3 in the Northern Region category of the annual ranking in U.S. News and World Report, 2018 Best Colleges . Nationally, university presidents, chief academic offers, and deans nominated Fairfield’s Service Learning Program among the best in the country for demonstrated excellence.

On the heels of the grand opening of the new Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies and the Tully Dining Commons, plans were announced that the Dolan School of Business will get a new home. A $40 million facility, scheduled to open in the fall of 2019, will feature modern simulated trading in a dynamic and interactive learning environment, a big data analytics lab, entrepreneurship center with ideation lab space, a gaming lab, active learning and case-based classrooms.

Fairfield University alumnus John Flannery ’83 was named CEO of General Electric. A GE veteran of 30 years and most recently president and CEO of GE Healthcare, Flannery succeeded longstanding 16-year chairman and CEO, Jeffrey Immelt, who retired from GE in October. Flannery graduated from Fairfield in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in finance.

More than 800 members of the Fairfield University community were among the 40,460 fans that packed Yankee Stadium when the Yankees played host to the visiting Baltimore Orioles in mid-September. Fairfield University Night at Yankee Stadium brought students, alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff together, including President Mark R. Nemec, PhD, and his wife Suzy. Dr. Nemec was joined for a pre-game ceremony, featured on the YES Network, by Chairman of the Board of Trustees Frank J. Carroll III ’89, Vice President for Marketing and Communications Jennifer Anderson '97, MBA’02, and Lucas the Stag.
