Many Faiths Celebrate Thanksgiving in Service on Nov 19

The desire to give thanks is an elemental shared value across all cultures, and the Thanksgiving holiday is an opportunity to stop, recollect all that we are grateful for, and share that gratitude with friends and family.

At the annual Thanksgiving Multifaith Service next Thursday, November 19 at 4 p.m., at Egan Chapel of St. Ignatius of Loyola, gratitude for all that we have will be expressed across a diverse range of faiths. All members of the University community are invited.

Building on the success of last year’s service, the event next week will feature a reflection on Thanksgiving by Sophomore Class President Zavon Billups. Faculty, staff and students will offer music, prayers, and readings from Native American Traditions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Secularism. There will be music and a candle-lighting ceremony.

“All participants are enriched by one another’s experience and traditions,” said Rev. David Spollett, Fairfield University’s Protestant chaplain and coordinator of the event. “Given the University’s commitment to educating men and women for others, the activity of publicly giving thanks is a natural—and an alternative to the dominant cultural norms of entitlement and consumption.”

Following the service, guests are invited stay for a reception and enjoy homemade “Indian” pudding, an old New England favorite!

The event is sponsored by Campus Ministry, the Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies, Center for Catholic Studies, Center for Faith and Public Life, JUHAN, Student Diversity Programs, Mission and Identity, Common Ground, KADIMA, R.A.F.T., Muslim Students’ Association and SASA.  FYE credit offered.
