High School STEM Students Honored

Budding engineers, scientists, and mathematicians will be on campus on June 2 for “The 19th Annual Excellence in Mathematics and Science Awards,” a special awards presentation honoring high school students from public, private and parochial schools in Fairfield and New Haven Counties.

Faculty, staff, proud parents, high school educators and Sikorsky executives are invited to honor high school students for excelling in their studies. This celebration will be held on Fairfield’s campus in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room on Tuesday, June 2, 2015.

Dean Bruce Berdanier, PhD, said, “This is an excellent event on campus because it provides us the opportunity to recognize the leading high school scholars in the areas of math and science while giving them a brief glimpse of possible career paths in science, engineering and Math with a great company like Sikorsky.”

In recognizing these standout students -- some of tomorrow's engineers, scientists and inventors - the University hopes to in turn inspire them to study and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The event comes at a time when fewer young Americans are showing interest in these key disciplines.

Dr. Berdanier and Susan Hitchcock, of Sikorsky Aircraft and a Fairfield University graduate, will both deliver words of encouragement to the young scholars at the event and address the necessity of supporting STEM study.

Dr. Berdanier said, “The need is obvious in our society where careers are becoming increasingly more specialized and more technical.  The future job outlook is great and offers exciting careers for these young people to solve society’s greatest problems if they pursue a program of study in science, engineering or math.”
