Karsonya “Kaye” Wise Whitehead, PhD, associate professor of communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola University Maryland and founding director of The Karson Institute for Race, Peace, and Social Justice, will present the keynote lecture at Fairfield University’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation.

Fairfield University will host award-winning speaker Karsonya “Kaye” Wise Whitehead, PhD, to deliver the 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation Lecture on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The convocation is free and open to the public. The theme for this year’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. observance is “Social Justice Now.”

Dr. Whitehead is an associate professor of communication and African and African American Studies at Loyola University Maryland, and the founding director of The Karson Institute for Race, Peace, and Social Justice. She hosts the award-winning radio show “Today with Dr. Kaye” on WEAA, 88.9 FM, and is the recent recipient of the Vernon Jarrett Medal for Journalistic Excellence for her outstanding reporting on the impact that racial reckoning has had in helping to close the social/racial wealth gap for Black people in America.

Her scholarship examines the ways race, class, and gender coalesce in American classrooms and political and social environments. Dr. Whitehead’s scholarship in activism, race, and African American history, and her work in journalism have garnered national attention and awards.
