The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts welcomes back mesmerizing Québec dance artist Frédérick Gravel for a three-night premiere of his newest work, This Duet That We’ve Already Done (so many times).
Hailing from Montreal, dancer and choreographer Frédérick Gravel’s latest work investigates what it means — simply and harshly — to be human, not shying away from total vulnerability in his performance. His U.S. premiere of This Duet That We’ve Already Done (so many times) will take center stage at the Quick for 7 p.m. performances on the evenings of April 7, 8, and 9.
Gravel currently holds the position of artistic director at Daniel Léveillé Danse (DLD), a performing arts company in Québec dedicated to the evolution and innovation of the arts. At DLD, Gravel strives to help artists develop their full potential. Not only a choreographer and dancer, but also a guitarist, musician, and lighting designer, Gravel is a inspiring figure in the performing arts world, with a clear and strong desire to create.
“The Quick Center is committed to presenting artists of international acclaim and we are honored to welcome Frédérick Gravel back to our stage,” said Lori Jones, director of programming & audience development. “We first presented Gravel’s work in 2017 and have built a partnership that has since extended into a Quick artist-in-residence in 2018, to create the work Fear and Greed. We believe that his work pushes boundaries and ultimately asks audiences to see the grit, beauty, and humor of everyday life.”
Breaking free from the traditional codes of dance performance, Gravel’s presentation of This Duet That We’ve Already Done (so many times) features the intricate dance of a couple in love, and one in which Gravel is intent upon, as he says, “keeping it real” and vulnerable, challenging the gendered cliches around duets in dance.
Offering a raw and intimate experience, Gravel’s innovative and unique choreography results in an anything-but-ordinary performance. As described in Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail, “Frédérick Gravel is arguably the most significant dance artist to emerge in Québec in the past ten years.”
Frédérick Gravel’s This Duet That We’ve Already Done (so many times) will be take place on April 7, 8, and 9, at 7 p.m. each evening.
