Ignatian Pilgrimage for Students: Application Deadline, Dec. 15

Applications are now being accepted for students interested in traveling to Spain to walk “In the Footsteps of St. Ignatius” this summer, May 23–30, 2022.

In 1521, Ignatius of Loyola’s spiritual conversion redefined his life and led him on a journey to follow Jesus Christ. This year marks the 500th anniversary of St. Ignatius’s pilgrimage.

In celebration of the anniversary that marks this Ignatian Year, Rev. Paul Rourke, S.J., vice president of Mission & Ministry at Fairfield University, has organized a pilgrimage experience in Spain and invites students to follow with him in the spiritual journey of St. Ignatius. Programming will creatively integrate spiritual, educational, and cultural activities with a goal of deepening knowledge, nurturing the human spirit, and broadening perspectives.

Students making the pilgrimage will begin by journeying to Loyola, Spain, the birthplace of St. Ignatius. They will tour the Castle of Loyola where Ignatius famously converted in 1521 and walk the paths of St. Sebastian and St. Olatz through Loyola. The group will then travel to the town of Xavier, birthplace of St. Francis, before embarking on a meditative trek to the mountains of Montserrat. The pilgrimage will conclude with Mass at the glorious Basílica de la Sagrada Família, Barcelona’s unfinished art nouveau masterpiece.
