A Message From Rev. Gerald Blaszczak, S.J., Vice President for Mission and Ministry

What does Easter mean in our human experience? Noted pastor and educator Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman ponders this in his meditation, "Resurrection: The Glad Surprise." He writes: "This meaning has to do with the very ground and foundation of hope about the nature of life itself... It is the announcement that life cannot ultimately be conquered by death, that there is no road that is at last swallowed up in an ultimate darkness, that there is a strength added when the labors increase, that multiplied peace matches multiplied trials, that life is bottomed by the glad surprise."

As the solemn celebration of Jesus' death and glorious resurrection begins, we pray that all who observe these days find themselves caught up in "glad surprise." May they see in Jesus’ resurrection the definitive, unconditional, astounding, "Yes" God speaks to each of us individually, and to all of our human family... Gazing in surprise at God’s boundless goodness and God’s commitment to us and to our world, may we radiate hope and confidence, renewed peace, and joy. Happy Easter!

With sincere good wishes,
Fr. Gerry Blaszczak
