Message From the Dean

Message From the Dean

Photo of the dean.

Dear Friends of GSEAP,

What a fabulous year in GSEAP! We are kicking off a new master of social work (MSW) program and a minor and 5-year program in Special Education this fall along with two fully online certificates that you will enjoy reading all about.

The remainder of my message pays tribute to five colleagues who are retiring this summer: Faith-Anne Dohm, Ginny Kelly, Diana Hulse, Paul Maloney, and Barbara Welles. On behalf of our faculty, staff, students, and Advisory Board, thank you for your many contributions.

Have a great summer everyone!

Bob Hannafin

Dean of the Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions

Faith-Anne

Mere mention of statistics

Makes many go ballistic

Break into hives or a cold sweat

With great dread and fret

Such was Faith-Anne’s fate

Since 1998

To teach what students love to hate

Supportive but firm, year after year

She helped them conquer fear

And overcome – as teacher, she’s without peer

Justly recognized with the Alpha Signa Nu award this year

But Faith-Anne is so much more

Governance guru, innovative administrator

A level of integrity that is rare

Dare we say stubborn at times, but fair

She’s a cherished colleague and friend

Whose days, she’ll now spend

Enjoying her home in Vancouver again

Faith-Anne Dohm

Ginny

Quick to laugh

Often at her own gaff

A generous friend

Ever an ear to lend

A collaborative spirit

Need a kind word? You’ll hear it

Junior colleagues especially

Mentoring is her specialty

Clients struggling with addiction

Confronting turmoil and friction

She eases their pain

Gives them hope to try again

She jogs, swims, climbs rock walls

Never falls

Tightly does she clench

We’ll miss our friend, the Italio-Irish super mensch

Virginia (Ginny) Kelly

Diana

Counselor, mentor, teacher extraordinaire

Author, scholar, virtuoso, chair

Chair with a flair

And her lemon cheesecake pie is the best anywhere

Ever gracious and charming,

At once determined and disarming

Diana is all these things and more

Accomplishments galore

Leader, innovator

ASN teacher of the year

Helping police to hear

But also listen, and walk the walk

The rest of us too in #CanWeTalk

In 2016, great recognition came

When #1 the Counseling program was named

Diana had vision, and led us toward her aim

She gave her best and from us demanded the same

May her passion always stay aflame

Virginia (Ginny) Kelly

Paul

Man of great character

Good soul, a truly good actor

So generous to the community

Done quietly, with utter humility

A special colleague, it deserves mention

He did it all never wanting attention

His deeds reveal a huge heart

Our thanks are inadequate, but it’s a start

Accomplished businessman and professor

Beloved by his students, they never felt lesser

What will we do without Paul?

Who will bring oat bars for us all?

Who will give us warm daily greetings?

Who will adjourn our faculty meetings?

Always meant what he said, said what he meant

He will enjoy kayaking into retirement

Paul Maloney

Barbara

World resident and global savant

Sweden is a frequent haunt

An accomplished cross-cultural researcher

Inherently curious, she’s a natural searcher

Honest and direct

Tough questions she won’t deflect

She gets to the point, speaks her mind

Always supportive and kind

Committed to excellence

She has a warm intelligence

Now she’s more than willin’

To spend more time with her grandchillen

Barbara Welles
