The Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras and the Mendelssohn Choir of Connecticut will accompany Fairfield’s Glee Club in an epic performance of Carmina Burana on Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

Composed by Carl Orff in the 1930s, Carmina Burana is based on a manuscript of poems written in the 13th century by vagabond clergymen, poets, and students who had become disenchanted with the church and society. They spoke and wrote in earthy, explicit language from a cynical, irreverent perspective. Their lifestyle was filled with gambling, drinking, and vices of many sorts. Known for its fast-moving and colorful choral music, the poems in Carmina Burana address corruption of the clergy, fate and its fickle nature, odes to drinking and gaming, and plenty of lusty love songs. The Glee Club will perform three sections — Springtime, In the Tavern, and The Court of Love — and the well-known powerhouse movement “O, Fortuna.”

Carmina Burana is a tour de force for choir and orchestra. It is a heart-pounding and evocative musical experience not to be missed — and certainly not for the faint of heart,” stated Glee Club Conductor Carole Ann Maxwell, D.S.M. “The Glee Club is so pleased to be sharing the stage with The Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras and The Mendelssohn Choir of Connecticut.”

Founded in 1947, The Fairfield University Glee Club is the oldest club on the Fairfield University campus. Its members share a deep love for music and a common desire to achieve excellence in it. The Glee Club has more than 100 undergraduate and graduate singers. Their voices explore a wide variety of repertoire, to share diverse styles of music and enrich audiences with programming that challenges and inspires.
