Andrew Jamieson ’26 traces his path to sports journalism to nights spent watching the New York Mets with his family—at home and at Citi Field. With friends, he debated fantasy football picks, tracked league leaders, and argued the merits of athletes across eras.

“I played sports my whole life for social interaction, but I knew I wasn’t going to go to the next level, so I thought, why not stay in touch with sports by watching and covering them?” he said.

Now a sports media and communication student in the John Charles Meditz College of Arts and Sciences, Jamieson has turned his passion for sports into professional experience as a contributing writer for Sports Illustrated—covering the Mets, no less—the same team he grew up cheering for.

The recommendation to apply for an SI internship came through David Albright, PhD, instructor of the practice of communication. Jamieson had made a name for himself on campus, working with Fairfield Athletics as sports director of WVOF, Fairfield’s student-run radio station, where he called games, hosted podcasts, and handled both play-by-play and color commentary. Landing the role at Sports Illustrated signaled a step beyond campus.

“It was honestly a surreal feeling getting the opportunity to write for Sports Illustrated,” he said, “and on top of that, I was asked to cover my favorite team, the New York Mets.”

As a contributor for the online platform Mets On SI, Jamieson’s typical day includes staying up to date on breaking news across several online platforms, watching games, breaking down post-game interviews, and tracking developments throughout Major League Baseball. Once he identifies a storyline, he pitches it to his editor and often has just a few hours to file.

Among his favorite assignments was covering a key press conference involving David Stearns, the Mets’ president of baseball operations, during a pivotal moment in MLB free agency—the Winter Meetings.

“I remember finishing that piece and thinking, ‘I want to write another one now.’ It was such a thrill and made me feel like a true professional seeing that article published,” he said.

This past August, Jamieson expanded his role with Sports Illustrated to include coverage of the Baltimore Orioles.

On top of his work with Sports Illustrated, Jamieson remains a steady presence in Fairfield’s sports media scene. He joined WVOF Sports as a first-year student, contributing to broadcasts across multiple sports, and went on to co-found a sports podcast and helped launch “Stags in the Studio,” an interview series featuring Fairfield Athletics administrators, student-athletes, and coaches. His Stags reporting has also taken him beyond campus—to the MAAC Basketball Championships and to cover Fairfield Women’s Basketball during March Madness.

“There’s nothing like being part of the live thrill of sports, and writing about a team I’ve loved my entire life has made me feel connected to the game in a unique way,” Jamieson said.

Looking ahead, “I’d love to stay in baseball,” he added, “combining storytelling, analytics, and digital media in a full-time role in sports journalism.”
