The interdisciplinary forum will gather scholars on January 14-15, 2027, in Florence, Italy.

The Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies at Fairfield University is extending its partnership with the American University of Florence (AUF) by offering a new health and nutrition conference in Italy. The event is open to scholars from a variety of disciplines, including nursing, public health, nutrition, and social work.

The conference will focus on the social, cultural, clinical, and ethical dimensions of health and nutrition and feature speakers from the international community.

Session topics will include nutritional interventions in chronic disease management, food access and food deserts, ethics and justice in food systems, the intersection of mental health and nutrition, and the impact of social connection and community health on health outcomes.

“We need to be reminded of the significance of social inclusion as a means to enrich our health and wellness, because as individuals, we are social beings,” said Sofia Galli, conference coordinator and PhD candidate at AUF. “That contributes great lengths to our health and wellness. Therefore, the social component shouldn't be decentered in the equation.”

The conference is open to Fairfield University and AUF graduate students and alumni. Scholars and health professionals from AUF’s sister school, Florence University of the Arts, and its partners at Misericordia Fiorentina, Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Careggi, and Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova will also be invited to participate.

Fairfield Egan first partnered with AUF in 2024 when it launched a nursing internship program in Italy.

“We are proud to have forged a successful internship program with the American University of Florence,” said Patricia Simino Boyce, PhD, RN, dean of the Egan School, “We look forward to further extending that partnership with initiatives like this conference, through which graduate students and alumni can engage with an international audience.”
