Medical Services

The Student Health Center staff evaluates and treats ill and injured students. Some examples of illnesses managed at the Student Health Center include (but are not limited to): respiratory infections, conjunctivitis ("pinkeye"), strep throat/tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, asthma exacerbations, sexually transmitted infections, and skin conditions. Students with general health concerns or questions are welcome to come in for a consultation.

The Student Health Center has a limited on-site lab for diagnostic testing (e.g., rapid strep testing, urinalysis). We also have a limited prescription medication dispensary. If indicated, our nurse practitioners and physicians will prescribe medications. Some commonly prescribed medications are available on-site (e.g., antibiotics, albuterol inhalers, antibiotic eye drops). Certain lab and pharmacy services do require a small charge. This fee may be paid by credit card or charged to tuition for undergraduates.

Students who wish to use their health insurance prescription plan may fill their prescriptions at a local pharmacy.

As part of a treatment plan, the Student Health Center clinician may recommend a consultation with a medical specialist or diagnostic testing (such as lab work or diagnostic imaging). The Student Health Center staff assists students with coordination of care.

The Student Health Center’s default laboratory for blood tests, cultures, etc. is Quest Diagnostics. Students may go to questdiagnostics.com to view Quest Diagnostics’ list of acceptable insurance providers and third-party payors.

The Student Health Center can administer certain vaccines. Modest fees are charged. We can offer lab orders for tuberculosis blood testing. Influenza vaccine clinics are held yearly.

The Student Health Center is a source of clear and up-to-date medical information, and strives to care for the whole person; sexuality and sexual health inclusive. This care is rendered in a confidential, non-judgmental, and welcoming manner and environment.

• HIV testing: Point of care HIV testing is available on site for a modest fee.
• The Student Health Center staff can refer students to community medical providers specializing in urology and/or obstetrics and gynecology as indicated

The Student Health Center, as part of a Catholic university, follows the Church’s teachings on reproductive issues. The Student Health Center does not provide contraception or contraceptive devices.

Resources for Sexual Assault Survivors

Our Allergy Injection Clinic is available for students who are under immunotherapy as prescribed by their private physicians AND have reached the maintenance phase of their treatment plan AND meet certain additional criteria (see Allergy Clinic Forms below).

The Student Health Center is not able to administer allergy injections to students in the "build-up" phase of treatment (i.e. receiving injections with increasing amounts of allergens). To be eligible for this clinic, the student must be in the maintenance phase of treatment receiving a stable dose of the allergens (typically every 2 - 4 weeks)

The Allergy Injection Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Appointment is necessary. No allergy injections are given on the weekends or at times outside of those listed. We do require students to wait 20 minutes after each injection.

Students with medical emergencies are transported to a local hospital by ambulance. The Student Health Center does employ drivers to transport students with non-emergent health needs to community Health Care Provider appointments arranged by the Student Health Center staff. This service is available on a limited schedule. Additionally, the University shuttle does provide access to local pharmacies and certain community Health Care Provider offices.

The Office of the Dean of Students, the Student Health Center, and Counseling & Psychological Services cannot provide notes excusing students from class. If a student has permitted it, a professor who calls to confirm information about the student’s situation will be informed as such.
