StagMates: Christine (Doody) Doherty ’92, P’21 and Stephen Doherty ’91, P’21

Christine and Steve’s StagMates story began almost the moment Christine stepped onto Fairfield University’s campus. It was her first few days as a freshman; Steve was already a sophomore. Their paths crossed early, and from that point on, there was something undeniable between them.

During her freshman orientation, a presenter told the incoming class to look around because “many of you will meet your future spouse here.” It sounded like a nice sentiment at the time… but Christine had no idea how prophetic it would be. A few months into school, a friend, who had been sitting next to Christine during that orientation event, asked Christine a simple question while walking back to Campion from the RecPlex; now that she’d met so many people at Fairfield, who could she actually see herself marrying someday if that person was indeed on campus? Without hesitation, and with a smile, her answer was Steve.

Throughout their college years, they shared dates, laughs, lots of moments listening to Irish Music (think mix tapes made from records at home!), and that unmistakable feeling of being completely enamored with one another. Timing, however, had its own plan. Though their connection never faded, life carried them in separate directions after graduation.

Then came chance—the kind Fairfield stories are made of. One Memorial Day weekend in the Hamptons, Christine and Steve ran into each other unexpectedly. In that instant, it was clear that what they’d felt all those years earlier had never really gone away. This time, the timing was right.

The rest truly is history. Christine and Steve have now been married for 29 years, building a beautiful life together and raising three children—one of whom proudly carries on the legacy as a Fairfield “baby stag” (‘21) and now, herself, a “StagMate” as well. They all know that there is something truly special about relationships rooted in the Fairfield community.

From first days on campus to a lifetime of love, theirs is a true StagMates story—proof that some connections are simply meant to find their way back home. And if you ask Steve and Christine, who both resided and met in Campion, they would still say, Campion rules the Quad.
