Fairfield University has appointed Matt Malone as its inaugural vice president for arts and culture, effective Oct. 19, 2026.

The newly created executive leadership position reflects the University’s continued commitment to serving as a center for arts and cultural programming in the region and will further Fairfield’s educational mission through the arts and humanities, enriching the lives of students and engaging audiences of all ages.

Reporting directly to President Mark R. Nemec, PhD, Malone will lead the new Division of Arts and Culture, overseeing the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, the Fairfield University Art Museum, and the Center for Arts & Minds. Working with colleagues across the institution, he will develop a comprehensive strategy to unify Fairfield's cultural initiatives, expand public programming, deepen partnerships with artists and cultural organizations, cultivate philanthropic support, and elevate Fairfield University's reputation as a premier destination for arts and culture.

Malone brings to Fairfield more than two decades of leadership experience spanning media, higher education, philanthropy, and mission-driven organizations. During his decade as president and editor-in-chief of America Media, he led one of the most significant transformations in the organization's history, expanding its national and international reach while elevating its standing as one of the leading Catholic media voices in the English-speaking world and strengthening its financial sustainability.

Beyond his executive leadership, Malone is a widely respected author and commentator whose work has focused on faith, culture, civic dialogue, and the role of mission-driven institutions in contemporary society. He has served as an analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a unique ability to bring people together through thoughtful dialogue and shared purpose.

"This newly created position advances Fairfield’s strategic commitment to being a destination for arts and culture, committed to human flourishing and achievement. The arts are fundamental to our mission of educating the whole person," said Dr. Nemec. "They invite us to explore new perspectives, engage with one another in meaningful ways, and strengthen the connections that unite our communities. Matt's appointment reflects our belief that Fairfield University can play an even greater role as a cultural resource for our region, while enriching the education of every student.”

“Fairfield has already established an extraordinary foundation through its arts organizations and academic programs," Dr. Nemec continued. "I look to Matt for leadership in advancing our efforts to be an institution where artists, scholars, students, and community members come together to experience the transformative power of the arts."

"I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to join Fairfield University and advance its extraordinary commitment and vision for the arts. I look forward to working with colleagues across the University and the wider community to further elevate its role as a destination for arts and culture,” said Malone. “The arts invite us to reflect more deeply, explore new ideas, and encounter one another with greater understanding. They inspire creativity, foster dialogue, and call us to serve the greater good. I am excited to join this vibrant community and help create experiences that leave people not only inspired, but with a renewed sense of possibility and purpose.”
