Fairfield University event to explore the right time to plan branding and trademark issues for a new business


Image: McAuliffe Hall Given the state of the economy, businesses have placed a greater emphasis on marketing and branding in an attempt to generate new business and effectively compete in the marketplace.

On Thursday, August 25 at 7 p.m., a Fairfield University School of Engineering event featuring Stamford, Connecticut attorney Terry McAllister will explore those timely issues in a talk entitled, "Oh, no! We Forgot to Name the Product!" Free and open to the public, the event will take place in the School of Engineering, McAuliffe Hall, Room 102. It is co-presented by the Inventors' Association of Connecticut (IACT), which brings together not only engineers, inventors and tinkerers, but people working in marketing, venture capitalists, intellectual property attorneys and entrepreneurs, among others.

Douglas Lyon, Ph.D., chair of the computer engineering department at Fairfield, said attendees will learn about when is the right time to think about branding and trademark issues for a new business. "Often times naming, branding and related issues fail to receive attention until the last minute," said Dr. Lyon, president of the IACT. "This discussion will draw out the importance of trademarks and brands for your business."

McAllister, a partner in Ohlandt, Greeley, Ruggiero & Perle, LLP, practices in all areas of trademark and copyright law. He will answer common questions inventors may have such as:

Before his present position, McAllister was Trademark and Copyright Counsel for NYNEX Corporation (now Verizon).
