Experience the rich diversity of student research from across academic disciplines and hear from students who collaborate with faculty mentors to develop projects that extend beyond the classroom.

We invite our community to celebrate and engage with the exciting scholarly endeavors of our undergraduate and graduate students that spotlight the wide range of student-faculty research and exemplify academic excellence at Fairfield.

— Vice Provost for Scholarly and Inclusive Excellence, Jocelyn Boryczka, PhD

The Office of the Provost is excited to announce the return of the Innovative Research Symposium to an in-person event in the Barone Campus Center (BCC) on Thursday, April 21, 2022. Following two years of hosting the Symposium virtually, students from across academic disciplines will share their research projects during two poster presentation sessions in the BCC from 10 a.m. to noon, and from 2 to 4 p.m.

Capstone Nursing and Health Studies projects will be presented during both sessions in the Oak Room. Independent projects, including the arts, business, counseling, education, and the humanities will be presented during the morning session in the Dogwood Room, followed by Sigma Xi students during the afternoon session. New this year, School of Engineering students will present their research during the afternoon session, on the lower level of the BCC.

Arts and culture will be spotlighted this year with student work featured in the BCC and the Studio Art Exhibit featured in the Lukas Gallery in Loyola Hall. Theatre Fairfield will also screen Project X in the BCC.

To feature areas of focus across the University's academic community, students—for the first time—have identified their projects in relation to community engagement, environmental sustainability, and diversity and inclusive excellence.

“We invite our community to celebrate and engage with the exciting scholarly endeavors of our undergraduate and graduate students that spotlight the wide range of student-faculty research and exemplify academic excellence at Fairfield,” said Vice Provost for Scholarly and Inclusive Excellence, Jocelyn Boryczka, PhD. “We continue to innovate. This year, we will showcase more of the arts and culture in creative ways in the BCC, introduce a dedicated space on the BCC lower level to highlight our engineering students, and offer the Stags’ Choice Awards as a new way for our community to participate in the Symposium.”

Everyone attending the Symposium can be a part of the Stags’ Choice Awards by texting their vote for the best research project in each of the four categories: nursing, Sigma Xi, engineering, and independent projects. Winning student researchers or research teams in each category will receive a $150 gift card to the Fairfield University Bookstore; Stags’ Choice Award winners will be announced at 4 p.m. in the BCC Lobby at the Symposium’s concluding event. The campus community is invited to join the Center for Social Impact at 5 p.m. in the Kelley Center Presentation Room for the Annual Celebration of Excellence in Community-Engaged Teaching, Research, and Service. Finally, the day will conclude at 7:30 p.m. with the Spring Jazz Ensemble Concert in Gonzaga Auditorium.
