Residential students will move back to campus in two phases, with Phase One beginning on January 21.

As the start of the spring 2021 semester nears, Fairfield University has rolled out its testing and reopening plan to safely welcome students, faculty, and staff back to campus.

With cleaning, social distancing, and mask protocols still in place, the University plans for residential students to move back to campus in two phases: Phase One will take place over January 21–23, and Phase Two is scheduled for January 30–31. An email communication sent to students covers the staged move-in process for campus residents, including assigned dates. Classes will begin on Monday, January 25, with all coursework taking place in a virtual format for the first two weeks of the spring semester. In-person learning experiences are expected to resume as early as Wednesday, February 10.

To maximize the time and opportunity for engaged learning in the classroom, Fairfield will not observe the President’s Day holiday in February, nor will there be a spring break week in March. However, students will receive an extended Easter holiday break from Thursday, April 1 through Tuesday, April 6.

Undergraduate classes will end for the semester on Tuesday, May 4, with final exams concluding on Thursday, May 13. Commencement exercises for the graduate and undergraduate Class of 2021 are slated to take place on Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23.

With the spring 2021 calendar in place, students and employees who plan to return to campus for the semester will be required to complete an at-home Covid-19 test prior to their arrival. For this semester’s back-to-campus testing, the University has selected Quest Diagnostics — a leading testing company — to provide an at-home, self-administered nasal swab test similar to the Broad test used for surveillance testing. A short-term testing exemption is available for students and employees who have had Covid-19 within 90 days prior to their campus return date. Detailed instructions for ordering and completing tests have been emailed directly to students and employees.

Once students have returned to campus, the University will implement a special second round of testing. All students will be tested on a pre-designated schedule prior to returning to classroom instruction. Testing for students returning in Phase One will take place on January 25 and 26, while students who return in Phase Two will be tested on February 2 and 3. All student beach residents will be asked to come to campus for testing on February 4.

The University will also continue to monitor the State of Connecticut’s guidelines on the Covid-19 vaccine allocation protocol and safety guidelines, and will update campus reopening procedures and safety measures as necessary.
