For Which it Stands…

Bellarmine Hall Galleries and Walsh Gallery

January 23-July 25, 2026

This exhibition examines depictions of the American flag through 75 works by a diverse group of artists working in a variety of media and across the political spectrum. Beginning in WWI with Childe Hassam’s Italian Day, May 1918 (lent by the Art Bridges Foundation) the exhibition takes us to the present day, including a textile sculpture commissioned for the show from Maria de Los Angeles. Other artists represented in the exhibition include Jasper Johns, Faith Ringgold, Robert Rauschenberg, Shepard Fairey, and Julie Mehretu. Forming part of America250: The Promise and Paradox, an initiative through which Fairfield University explores 250 years of the American experiment, For Which It Stands... challenges viewers to consider who the American flag truly represents and whether justice is available to all.

For Which it Stands… joins a campus-wide series of cultural and visual and performing arts events being presented as part of the national celebrations surrounding the semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) of the founding of the United States of America on July 4, 1776.

This exhibition is curated by Museum Director Carey Mack Weber.
