Fairfield University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts is delighted to present the Emmy Award-winning performance collective Manual Cinema in Leonardo! A Wonderful Show About a Terrible Monster on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 3 p.m.
Inspired by two beloved books from acclaimed children’s author Mo Willems, Manual Cinema uses low-fi props and cutting-edge technology to bring heartwarming tales of courage and friendship to life in this unique performance.
Poor Leonardo. He tries so hard to be scary, but he just… isn’t. In this imaginative adaptation, puppets, props, and original songs transport audiences into Willems’ world, where even “terrible” monsters can discover the true meaning of bravery and connection.
Manual Cinema is an internationally renowned performance collective, design studio, and film/video production company celebrated for combining handmade shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques, and live music to create immersive theatrical experiences. Using vintage overhead projectors, multiple screens, live cameras, intricate puppetry, and a multi-channel soundscape, the group transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, reinventing what it means to “go to the movies” while keeping the liveness and wonder of theatre at its core.
This family-friendly performance runs 45 minutes and is recommended for ages 3 and up. Prior to the performance, The Art Studio will be in the Quick lobby offering a free hands-on puppet-making activity for kids and families. Activities will begin at 2 p.m.
This performance is sponsored, in part, by the Jamie Hulley Arts Foundation.
