Fairfield Rises in Wall Street Journal-Times Higher Education 2022 College Ranking

Rising to #190 this year, Fairfield is ranked among the Top 25% of colleges and universities in the nation, and among the Top 15% for Engagement.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (September 30, 2021)—Fairfield University continues to rise in national college rankings, this year placing #190 out of 796 institutions in the U.S., according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ)-Times Higher Education (THE) 2022 College Ranking. Among schools in the Northeast region, Fairfield was ranked #76 out of 258 institutions.

Within the “Engagement” category, Fairfield placed high in the Top 15% nationwide, which considers student engagement, interaction with teachers and students, student recommendation and accredited programs. The University was ranked in the top 100 at #96 in the 2022 annual ranking.

The annual ranking includes the results of the THE US Student Survey, which examines a range of key issues including student engagement with their studies, student/teacher interaction, and satisfaction with their experience, and uses a balanced scorecard approach, with 15 individual performance indicators combining to create an overall score that reflects the broad strength of the institution. Data come from a variety of sources: the US government Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the College Scorecard, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), the THE US Student Survey, the THE Academic Survey, and the Elsevier bibliometric dataset.

The overall methodology explores four key areas: Resources which represents 30% of the overall ranking; Engagement which represents 20% of the overall ranking; Outcomes which represents 40% of the overall ranking; and Environment which represents 10%. 

Fairfield University was also recently recognized by U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Colleges” rankings, topping their 2022 annual lists with both regional and national distinctions, including: #3 among Best Regional Universities in the North; #3 among the Most Innovative Schools in the northern region; #3 on the Best Undergraduate Teaching – Regional Universities list; and #19 for Best Value Schools – Regional Universities North.

Nationally, Fairfield University’s Dolan School programs were recognized in the top 32% on the Best Undergraduate Business Programs list; #21 Best Undergraduate Business Programs – Accounting; #16 for Best Undergraduate Business Programs – Finance; and #23 on the Best Undergraduate Business Programs – Marketing. Best Undergraduate Business Programs – Business Analytics, ranked #13. Fairfield’s Egan School of Nursing was ranked in the top 11% nationally, and the University also ranked #5 out of 13 Colleges That Give Merit Aid to the Most Students.
