Bridgeport and Fairfield students to read peace poems at upcoming Fairfield University celebration

Fairfield University will invite dozens of budding young poets to read from their award-winning poetry at the seventh annual Poetry for Peace Contest Winners' Celebration.

Who: Primary students grades K-8 from Bridgeport and Fairfield schools and their families. The contest is designed to encourage discussion of how the imaginative and original language of poetry relates to the creation of peace and gives young writers a chance to express their own concepts of peace through the creative act of writing. The media are welcome to attend this special event.

What: The seventh annual Poetry for Peace Contest Winners’ Celebration.

Where: Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, Fairfield University Campus

When: 6:00 p.m., Friday, January 30, 2015 (Reception at 5:30 p.m.)

Details: A record number of 1,200 poems from Bridgeport and Fairfield students were submitted to this year’s Poetry for Peace competition. This event is held in conjunction with Fairfield University’s MLK Holiday Observation Week, a weeklong celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s work and legacy.

The winning poems are published in a book, which will be distributed to the children and their families at the event.

Sponsored by Fairfield University’s Writing Center; The English Department; The Connecticut Writing Project; and the MLK Coordinating Committee.

This event is free and open to the public.
