Connecticut Writing Project-Fairfield and Fairfield University Athletics partner to celebrate mentors

Fairfield University Athletics and the Connecticut Writing Project-Fairfield are asking kids to give a written shout out to the adults in their lives who help them focus and build integrity and responsibility – and they could score tickets to a game to boot. Children in grades K through 8 may nominate the teacher, coach and/or mentor who has inspired them, boosting their self-awareness and self-esteem in the classroom, on the field and beyond. Winning submissions will be awarded four tickets for the student and four for the mentor to a Fairfield University athletic event, where both individuals will receive recognition during a break in the action.

“Writing objectives outlined in the Common Core State Standards requires young people to make arguments with supportive claims that have clear reasons and relevant evidence , ” said Bryan Ripley Crandall, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of the Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield University . “Our collaborative prompt offers a real-world opportunity for Connecticut youth to write. Teachers can use the opportunity to support young writers as they compose for an authentic audience. It allows students to nominate a person and develop the case for why an individual deserves recognition.”

Fairfield University Athletics Director Gene Doris welcomed the opportunity to support mentorship. “As any of our scholar-athletes can tell you, strong mentors can have such a positive impact on a young person’s life. We welcome the chance to celebrate those who truly make a difference.”
