"Shriver" author to visit Fairfield University Bookstore

Image: Shriver Chris Belden, a 2011 graduate of Fairfield University's MFA in Creative Writing Program, will read from his second novel, "Shriver," at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 19, at the Fairfield University Bookstore, 1499 Post Road, Fairfield. Sponsored by the MFA in Creative Writing Program, the event is free and open to the public.

"Shriver" is a farce about mistaken identity set at a writers' conference, where a murder may have been committed. "In a style somewhere between Evelyn Waugh and Mel Brooks, Belden's satire lampoons all things literary but also, amazingly, convinces us to care about the fools that these mortals be," wrote Alan Davis, author of "So Bravely Vegetative" and "Rumors from the Lost World."

Belden was born and raised in Canton, Ohio, and studied film at the University of Michigan. He played drums in a couple of Ann Arbor bands and then lived to New York City for 20 years before moving to Connecticut. He taught creative writing and English at Fairfield University, founded and continues to teach at the Ridgefield Writers Workshop and runs a writing workshop at a maximum security prison. He is also the author of the novel "Carry On."
