In the wake of multiple deaths of American pets due to contaminated pet food, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration has proposed for the first time a rule to safeguard animal feed and pet food. The rule calls for facilities that manufacture, process, pack, or hold food for animals be required to adhere to stepped up manufacturing practices, implement hazard analysis and risk-based preventive controls. The FDA plans three public meetings on the proposed rule.
