Fairfield University School of Nursing adult program director honored by statewide nursing organization

Murdock Life Long Learning Award from the Connecticut League for Nursing (CLN). The award is given annually to nursing leaders who have contributed significantly to the profession.

"Carole Pomarico is a distinguished educator and has a substantial record of support of life-long learning," said Murdock, treasurer of the CLN Board of Directors and a respected nurse leader for whom the award was named after. "Her career spans over 25 years and she is the adult program director at Fairfield University's School of Nursing. Her current role includes recruitment and advisement for the non-traditional student. She reaches out to the community to encourage prospective students to pursue nursing as a career."

The Fairfield, Connecticut resident has increased the enrollment in the second-degree program as well as the RN to BSN program. "Carole's commitment and passion for nursing and students has made her a valuable person in the recruitment and retention of students," said Meredith Wallace Kazer, Ph.D., APRN, FAAN, associate dean of the School of Nursing.

Pomarico earned a master of arts degree from Fairfield and a master of science in nursing degree from the University of Pittsburgh. A pediatric clinical nurse specialist, she received a grant from the Helene Fuld Health Trust in collaboration with Duke University, for the project, "Evaluating the Outcomes of Nursing Education." She also has received two grants from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which provides funds to those who are underrepresented in nursing. She currently teaches second-degree accelerated students.

This award is named after Jane Murdock whose commitment to nursing education and passion for life-long learning has significantly contributed to the success of the CLN, which has a rich tradition in supporting people pursuing careers in nursing. Murdock has demonstrated that by immersing yourself in new modalities of teaching and learning, you create a profound impact on those who you work with and teach.
