Image: A O Scott Fairfield University's Open VISIONS Forum lecture series goes to the movies with A.O. Scott, film critic for The New York Times , at 8 p.m., Monday, January 27, 2014, at Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. In a lecture entitled "Critic's Picks," Mr. Scott will discuss his movie viewing - and reviewing - experience; he sees about 300-350 movies a year and reviews around 150-175. Introducing Mr. Scott will be Michael Serazio, Ph.D., deputy director of Open VISIONS Forum and assistant professor of communication. Following Mr. Scott's presentation, there will be an informal conversation and discussion with Rev. Mark P. Scalese, S.J., associate professor of visual & performing arts, Dr. Elizabeth A. Haas, visiting assistant professor of visual & performing arts, and Philip Eliasoph, Ph.D., professor of art history and founder/moderator of Open VISIONS Forum. This program is made possible in part by the generous support of Connecticut Humanities. The Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County is a community partner for this event, and Moffly Media is the exclusive magazine sponsor for the 2013-14 Open Visions Forum. Single tickets are $45.

A.O. Scott has been a film critic at The New York Times since 2000. In addition to thousands of movie reviews, he has written essays on film, book and popular culture for the Times's Arts & Leisure, Book Review and Sunday Magazine sections, and contributed hundreds of videos to the nytimes.com Website. In 2010, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for criticism. Before joining the Times , he was Sunday book reviewer at Newsday , and editor at Lingua Franca and the New York Review of Books and a freelance contributor to The New York Review , Slate , the Village Voice and many other publications. A frequent guest on The Charlie Rose Show, Morning Joe , NPR's On Point and the CBS Early Show , he was co-host of At The Movies , the syndicated movie-review show started by Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel, during the 2009-2010 season. Mr. Scott was educated at Harvard and Johns Hopkins, and has taught at Hopkins, Trenton State College and Cooper Union. In the Spring of 2014, he will be a visiting lecturer at Wesleyan University. He is completing a book, tentatively titled "Better Living Through Criticism," for The Penguin Press, and preparing a volume of his film writing for Penguin Paperbacks. Mr. Scott lives with his family in Brooklyn.
