Fairfield University offers weeklong summer program | Press Releases

Image: Students Adults interested in taking thought-provoking classes can spend a week in June learning from some of the region's most dynamic professors through a special program being offered at Fairfield University.

Fairfield's Learning for a Lifetime program offers a five-day summer program running from Monday, June 3 through Friday, June 7, 2013, which is designed to engage adults who know learning continues long after traditional schooling ends. Each day features three lectures on a range of subjects from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with no homework or exams. This summer's topics are:

"The History of Opera" with Laura Nash, Ph.D., associate professor of visual and performing arts. Dr. Nash will examine trends in the development of opera from its origins in the early 17th century through the end of its "golden age" in the late 19th century.

"At the Movies: Love in Song" with Wesley Davis, part-time professor of film, television and media arts. Davis will consider the history of popular music, torch songs, longing and loneliness, memory, dreams, and more.
"The Question of Religion" with Dennis Keenan, Ph.D., professor of philosophy. Dr. Keenan will cover 19th- and 20th-century philosophy and transformations in traditional understandings of religion in the wake of the work of philosophers, such as Hegel, Nietzche, Kierkegaard, Derrida and others.

Participants are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch Monday through Thursday. Coffee, tea and dessert will be provided. A buffet lunch on Friday is included in the tuition.
