New documentary unveils the dark side of Tuscany

Image: Peasant and the Priest Director Esther Podemski introduces and screens her film "The Peasant and The Priest," a new documentary about the perils of globalization through the eyes of two Italian men in their eighties.

What:
"The Peasant and The Priest" considers two aspects of globalization - disturbances in the landscape and human trafficking - alarming forces at work in Tuscany, where the film is set. The documentary offers a reinterpretation of this much-loved region, an area shaped and transformed by co-existing extremes of human labor, cultivation and exploitation. Podemski will introduce the film and hold a Q&A after the screening. The event sponsors are the Italian Studies program and the departments of Modern Languages & Literatures and Catholic Studies .

About Esther Podemski:
Director Esther Podemski is a documentary filmmaker and painter. In addition to "The Peasant and The Priest," she produced and directed "House of the World," a documentary about the aftermath of the Holocaust. Shot in Poland, it was screened in Europe and traveled throughout the United States with the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival. The film has been broadcast on national television and screened at Lincoln Center, the Los Angeles International Jewish Film Festival and numerous colleges. Her dual-screen projection "5 Days in July," which revisits the Newark riots of 1967, has been exhibited at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Alabama and won the Director's Choice award at the Black Maria Film Festival and the Jury Award for best short film at the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival.
