Fairfield University announces 9/11 ten-year anniversary commemorations

Image: 9-11 memorial A five-day commemoration of 9/11 at Fairfield University will culminate in a 10-year anniversary Mass in the Egan Chapel of St. Ignatius Loyola on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. The anniversary has particular significance on the Fairfield campus that each year has honored the 14 Fairfield alumni who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. All events are open to the public.

Beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 7, and continuing through Sunday, there will be a "Circle of Remembrance" at the Barone Campus Center Traffic Circle, with a tent covering "Reflection Walls" on which students, faculty and staff are being invited to leave their thoughts and remembrances written on postcards that will be provided. Campus community members and visitors are encouraged to stop by and take some time to remember those who died on that tragic day.

On Thursday, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m., "Remembering 9/11: An Interfaith Prayer Service" will be held in the interfaith prayer space at 42 Bellarmine on the southwest corner of the campus. Sponsoring the service are the Carl & Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies, the Office of Mission and Identity, and the Center for Catholic Studies.

On Friday, Sept. 9, the 12:10 daily Mass in the Egan Chapel of St. Ignatius Loyola will be offered in remembrance of the victims of 9/11, followed by a 1:00 p.m. ceremony at the "Circle of Remembrance," with a reflection by Fr. Charles Allen, S.J., assistant to the president; music by the Fairfield University Glee Club; and the planting of American flags in the circle. At the end of the ceremony there will be a procession to Alumni House where a section of a steel beam, once part of the New York World Trade Center, forms a memorial to the 14 alumni. A small reception follows the ceremony.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Circle of Remembrance remains open, with the 9/11 Anniversary Mass taking place at 11:00 a.m.
