Image: Caryatid Art History Professor Katherine Schwab, Ph.D. Presents at Association of Greek American Professional Women (AGAPW) during New York Fashion Week Networking Party, Celebrating the Culture and Fashion of Classical Athens

What:
Braids are hot this year, on the red carpet as well as side streets everywhere. The inspiration of this latest hairstyling phenomenon dates back to classical Athens, evidence of which may be found in the south porch of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Dr. Schwab teamed up with a professional hair stylist and six Fairfield University students to see if these beautiful Caryatid hairstyles could be replicated. The project has received coverage in Greek publications, and ARTnews Magazine. Dr. Schwab has given presentations and screenings on the project for a variety of audiences including the Greek Embassy in Washington, D.C., Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan, and most recently at the Acropolis Museum in Athens, where five of the original Caryatids are on display.

About Dr. Schwab:
Katherine Schwab is a professor of Art History at Fairfield University, curator of the Plaster Cast Collection at the University's Bellarmine Museum of Art. The collection includes recent gifts from the First Ephorate of Classical Antiquities - Acropolis Museum. Schwab received her B.A. from Scripps College, an M.A. in Art History from Southern Methodist University and her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. She has been awarded three fellowships by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and as well as other honors and grants in support of her research on the Parthenon Metopes, the Caryatid Hairstyles, and restoration work on the plaster cast collection.
