Fairfield University has added two screenings to its film series celebrating LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning) History Month. William Friedkin's groundbreaking 1970 film The Boys in the Band will be screened at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 1. At 7 p.m. that evening, director Crayton Robey will attend a screening of his documentary Making the Boys , which considers the creation of Friedkin's film. Robey will take questions from the audience after the film.

Both screenings will take place in the multimedia room of the DiMenna-Nyselius Library and are free and open to the public.

The Boys in the Band was written by Mart Crowley and is based on his off-Broadway play of the same title. It is among the first major American films to revolve around gay characters and is often cited as a milestone in the history of "queer cinema." Wesley Davis, adjunct professor of New Media Film, Television and Radio, will introduce the film and share some original film memorabilia.

Making the Boys explores the drama, struggle and enduring legacy of the first-ever gay play and subsequent Hollywood movie to successfully reach a mainstream audience. This documentary features anecdotes from the surviving cast and filmmakers and perspectives from legendary figures from the stage and screen. Refreshments will be served at the 7 p.m. screening.
