Fairfield University's Glee Club as "Glee Goes Global" at the Quick Center for the Arts April 16

The Fairfield University's Glee Club presents its spring concert, "Glee Goes Global" with Taiko Masala Japanese Drummers on Saturday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Quick Center for the Arts. Tickets are $10, general and $6, students. "Glee Goes Global" continues the University focus on Global Citizenship and it is an Arts & Minds presentation.

Carole Ann Maxwell, D.S.M., Glee Club artistic director and conductor, invited Taiko Masala, a group that has thrilled audiences throughout the United States with performances of Japan's traditional drumming-Taiko, to perform with the ensemble for the spring concert. Beth Palmer is the accompanist.

The program begins with Sharon MacCallum's arrangement of Fairfield University's Alma Mater and continues with Hungarian composer Ivan Erod's "Viva la Musica!". Fairfield University percussionists Bradley Fay and Peter Sweeney join the ensemble in the Welsh piece "L'Homme Arme" by Karl Jenkins.

The ladies of the Glee Club sing, in Japanese, "Hotaru Koi" arranged by Ro Ogura and Joshua Matteo brings his Japanese to bear as he sings "M" by Ayumi Hamasaki. The ensemble sings "Jasmine Flower," a Chinese song arranged by Jing Ling Tam. The Taiko Masala drummers close the first part of the evening.

Sweet Harmony, the Chamber Singers and the Bensonians are featured in the second half of the evening. The concert ends with the Glee Club's rendition featuring Brad Bittman's bass, of "We Are the World," by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.

Directions: Fairfield University is located off I-95, exit 22 at 1073 North Benson Road, Fairfield, CT 06824. Access to the Quick Center for the Arts is through the Barlow Road gate at 200 Barlow Road. Special note: From Oct. 4, 2010 through June 30, 2012, the southern end of North Benson Road (Rt. 135) will be closed to traffic on nights and weekends. Round Hill Road intersects with Barlow and provides access to the Quick Center for the Arts.
