Fairfield University's Center for Catholic Studies announces 2010 spring schedule of events | Press Releases

Fairfield University's Center for Catholic Studies has announced its 2010 spring schedule of lectures and Living Theology Workshops. The dynamic list of talks by prominent scholars include discussions about the Qur'an, "the seduction" of Eve, and law and morality in relation to the ‘Culture Wars." The Living Theology series continues with workshops to help Catholics and other individuals learn about the latest thinking in the Church. The events are open to the public.

With the exception of the Eighth Annual Catholic Studies/Voice of the Faithful Conference, all events are free. Paul Lakeland, Ph.D., the Aloysius P. Kelley S.J. Chair and Professor of Catholic Studies, is the director of the Center for Catholic Studies.

Wednesday, February 10 - The 2010 Bellarmine Lecture will be delivered by Rev. Patrick J. Ryan, S.J., the Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University. His talk is entitled, "The Qur'an and Culture: Conflicting Models of a Relationship." It will take place in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room at 8 p.m.

Saturday, February 13 - This Living Theology Workshop is entitled, "Movies and the Catholic Imagination: The Sequel." Rev. Mark Scalese, S.J., assistant professor of New Media at Fairfield University, is the speaker.

It will take place in the DiMenna-Nyselius Library Multimedia Room from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Tuesday, February 16 - Sister Mary Beth Lloyd, M.P.F., international mission director, will discuss AIDS orphans in Africa. This event will take place in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room at 5 p.m.

Saturday, March 13 - This Living Theology Workshop is entitled, "Sex and the Soul: Juggling Sexuality, Spirituality, Romance and Religion on America's Colleges Campuses." Donna Freitas, Ph.D., assistant professor of religion at Boston University, is the speaker. It will take place in the DiMenna-Nyselius Library Multimedia Room from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Tuesday, March 16 - The Fourth Annual Jewish-Christian Engagement Lecture will be delivered by Reuven Kimelman, Ph.D., professor of Classical Judaica at Brandeis University. His talk is entitled, "The Seduction of Eve: Why Did She Do It? " The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Catholic Studies and Fairfield University's Bennett Center for Judaic Studies. It will take place in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room at 8 p.m.

Image: C Kaveny Wednesday, March 24 - The Third Annual Commonweal Magazine Lecture will be delivered by M. Cathleen Kaveny, Ph.D., J.D., the John P. Murphy Foundation Professor of Law and Professor of Theology at Notre Dame University. Her talk is entitled, "Law, Morality, and the Culture Wars." The event will take place in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room at 8 p.m.

Saturday, March 27 - The Eighth Annual Catholic Studies/Voice of the Faithful Conference. Dr. Elisabeth Schüssler-Fiorenza, the Krister Stendahl Professor of Divinity at the Harvard Divinity School and author of "In Memory of Her," will discuss her book, "The Discipleship of Equals." The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Catholic Studies and Voice of the Faithful in the Diocese of Bridgeport. It will take place in the Oak Room, located in the John A. Barone Campus Center, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Matteo Ricci, Jonathan Spence, Ph.D., the Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale University, will discuss "Ricci's Legacy: The Perils of Success." The event will take place in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room at 8 p.m.

Wednesday, April 7 - A lecture entitled, "Saints, Spirits, and Madonnas: The Everyday Religion of Latina Culture," will be delivered by Michelle Gonzalez, Ph. D., assistant professor of Religious Studies at the University of Miami. The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Catholic Studies. It will take place in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room at 6 p.m.

Saturday, April 17 - This Living Theology Workshop is entitled, "The Subversive News of the Kingdom: A Look at the Parables of Jesus." Rev. Gerry Blaszcak, S.J., Fairfield's university chaplain, is the speaker. It will take place in the DiMenna-Nyselius Library Multimedia Room from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
