The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will play an evening of Beethoven at Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts Saturday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. There will be a pre-concert Art-to-Heart discussion from 7-7:40 p.m. with Michael Lawrence, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Director of Artistic Programs. This presentation is part of Fairfield University's Arts & Minds season.

Image: Ani Kavafian The concert features pianist Gilbert Kalish, a major influence as an educator and pianist in myriad performances and a Peabody Medal winner; and violinist Ani Kavafian, concertmaster of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. The all-Beethoven program features the Beethoven Sonata in G major for Violin and Piano, Op. 30, No. 3, Beethoven Sonata in A minor for Violin and Piano, Op. 23, Beethoven Sonata in A major for Violin and Piano, Op. 12, No. 2 and Beethoven Sonata in G major for Violin and Piano, Op. 96.

Kalish has been the pianist of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players for 30 years and was a founding member of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, a group that flourished during the 1960s and 70s in support of new music. He is particularly known for his partnership of many years with mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani as well as for current collaborations with soprano Dawn Upshaw and cellists Timothy Eddy and Joel Krosnik.

Kavafian enjoys a career as soloist, chamber musician and teacher. She will soon start a project to record the complete Mozart Concertos with conductor William Boughton of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. In Dec. 2009, she conducted workshops in Taiwan for talented students, together with CMS Co-Artistic Directors David Finckel and Wu Han; Leon Fleisher and Arnold Steinhardt joined them in conducting the workshops. She appears frequently with her sister, violinist Ida Kavafian and in Nov. 2009 they celebrated the 25th anniversary of their Carnegie Hall debut as a duo with a concert at CMS.
