Alpha Mu Gamma to celebrate Foreign Language Week at Fairfield University | Press Releases

Image: Alpha Mu Gamma Fairfield University student members of the Eta Pi chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma, the national foreign language honor society, and the Department of Modern Language and Literatures, will celebrate National Foreign Language Week, which Governor Jodi Rell has officially proclaimed in Connecticut from March 1 to March 7.

Free and open to the public, Fairfield's celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, March 1, through Thursday, March 4, in the lower level of the Barone Campus Center. The events, which are designed to stress the need for and importance of foreign language study, will include a language-themed game day on March 1, a craft day on March 2, a celebration of holidays and traditions on March 3, and a music and dance presentation on March 4. The public is welcome.

The week will kick off on Sunday, Feb. 28, when Eta Pi honors 82 new inductees and senior members during its annual Induction Ceremony.

National Foreign Language Week began in 1957 when the then-president of Alpha Mu Gamma petitioned U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower to set aside a week to honor foreign languages. Each succeeding president and many state governors have endorsed the celebration, proclaiming the first week of March to be National Foreign Language Week.
