Fairfield University Glee Club performs a Christmas adventure "Sting and Coldplay meet Benjamin Britten" December 4 and 5 at Quick Center

Image: Glee Club The Fairfield University Glee Club has a "Collage" Holiday concert in store for the many fans that attend this annual event. The Christmas Concert showcases a signature technique of weaving diverse musical genres into one luminous whole. With Carole Ann Maxwell's, D.S.M. sure-hand conducting, two concerts are performed at the Quick Center for the Arts on Friday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. Tickets for the Quick Center concerts are: $10 public; $6 students. The Glee Club is an event of Fairfield's 2009-10 Arts & Minds series.

The following Friday, Dec. 11, the Glee Club will perform the same concert at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside at 8 p.m. Those interested in the St. Catherine's concert, please call (203) 637-3661. Advance sale tickets are $10; $15 at the door.

The holiday adventure begins with Benjamin Britten's "A Ceremony of Carols" "Procession," "Wolcum Yole!" and "There Is No Rose." Craig Hella Johnson arranged "Lo How a Rose/The Rose" and is sung by the Chamber Singers. The Glee Club sings "As Dew in Aprille" and "This Little Babe." "Viva La Vida," arranged by Maxwell and Beth Palmer. Harpist Christine Cole provides and interlude prior to Sting's "A Thousand Years" solos including, "Spring Carol" and "Deo Gracias" and "Recession" complete the first act.

The Chamber Singers sing an Anonymous 16th Century piece in Spanish, "No la Devemos Dormir." Rosemary O'Connor and Rosemary Knowles are sopranos with Ralph Belvedere, as tenor. Once more an Anonymous 16th Century song, "Riu, Riu, Chiu" - nightingale sounds - is sung by tenors Luke Paulino and Jonathan Haskins. This segment finishes with the jolly "Jingle Bells."

The Men's Ensemble directed by Jonathan Haskins and Joe Quinn and Sweet Harmony, directed by Katie Foley and Rosemary Knowles take the stage. Finishing out the evening is the full Glee Club and a soloist singing "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Night of Silence" by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Daniel Kantor. John Williams' "Exultate Justi" sends the audience out with great satisfaction.
