Hubbard Street Dance Chicago comes to Fairfield University's Quick Center for the Arts February 14 | Press Releases

Tired of the usual Valentine's Day fare? Come to Fairfield University's Quick Center for the Arts to see the critically acclaimed exuberant Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (HSDC), Saturday, Feb. 14 at 8:00 p.m. There is a post-show Art to Heart Q & A with the company following the performance.

In the thirty-one years HSDC has been performing, their innovative repertoire and athletic presentation has captivated audiences worldwide. Under today's leadership of Jim Vincent, the company continually expands its diverse repertoire with work by leading national and international choreographers and this performance is an example of three such talented artists.

Margaret Donlon's "Strokes Through the Tail" "is a hilarious meditation on macho conductors in black tailcoats and the ballerina who turns them into white swans who don't know whether they're coming or going," wrote Hedy Weiss in her Chicago Sun-Times review last December. Donlon, who set the dance to sections of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, communes with the great composer and celebrates the humor in his music through the agility of the dancers.

Doug Varone's "The Constant Shift of Pulse" uses his distinctive choreographic voice in fluid yet unpredictable movement in this new work that demonstrates dancers testing the boundaries of trust and release. The dance is set to the music of John Adams.

Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin's clever and humorous full-company piece, "Minus 16," breaks down the barrier between audience and performer. With a variety of music ranging from Dean Martin to cha cha to traditional Israeli folk music, the HSDC dancers engage the audience in unexpected ways.

HSDC is funded in part by the National Dance Project of the New England Foundation for the Arts, with lead funding from Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Additional funding is provided by The Ford Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, JP Morgan Chase Foundation and The Metlife Foundation.
