Formed in 1973 and still going strong, Los Lobos continues to surprise itself and its audiences. The prolific Mexican-American quintet from East Los Angeles, has always maintained its roots while using musical molds built on the blues, rockabilly, jazz and Latin to create challenging and conscience-raising songs with thought-provoking lyrics. Over its long career, Los Lobos has evolved into a respected artistic entity searching for themes and topics that are an interpretive pulse of our times.

Los Lobos' saxophonist/keyboardist/percussionist and producer Steve Berlin was quoted discussing some of the ensemble's groundbreaking work and, almost offhandedly, described their winning artistic philosophy, "... we just played the songs that showed up, naturally. With each project, we try to make our songwriting an artistic statement, where the stories we're telling and the arrangements we're composing get our point across." As with most enduring artists, Los Lobos exudes the proven confidence that allows the ensemble to keep its songs, as Berlin continues, "opaque, mysterious. We leave it up to the listener to interpret ... That's the highest purpose of artists, we think - not to rob the spirit out of the work."

Los Lobos is a vibrant example of Fairfield University's strategic vision, "using 'integration' as a way of approaching education." The Fairfield community has selected Latin America - Images, Dialogue and Action as one of three areas of focus for 2009-10 and the Quick Center for the Arts opens its season with Los Lobos as a beacon of culturally enriched programming.
